Japanese saws and chisels

When I started out as a boatbuilders apprentice in Knysna 16 years ago, I was marvelled by the sharpness and accuracy of my boss's Japanese saws and chisels. Their (the Japanese) belief is that it is less strenuous to pull whilst sawing than to pull therefore the teeth face the user. They come in a variety of thicknesses including .6mm and leave the smoothest finish. The rip blade is great for dovetailing. The chisels are still made like their swords ie. thousands of layers of metal are pressed together and the chisel should only be sharpened manually on a stone, never on the grinder. They don't come cheap but become good friends for life....
