Drawer runners
First WELCOME at Talking Sawdust, woodworm! I hope you will find the site useful.
As for drawer runners, I do mine in the middle. I cut a rebate in the side of the drawer, then screw a wooden runner to the carcass, slightly narrower than rebate. Off course you have to work out your widths.
As spot of Cobra wax makes it all slide smoothly!
There are many different ways to skin the cat. Some simply run the base of the drawer on a cleat. I am happy with the way I do it, works well.

Thanks for your input Div I think the blog will be a great help and a lot of fun

The cleat (drawer runner) that runs in the rebate, even though you cut it a touch smaller do you leave it square (90deg) ? or do you slightly taper going into the rebate? Be it one side top or bottom.
I heard or read from some old wood sage that it's better to have a slight taper to avoid sticking. And it must be made of a harder wood that the drawer sides.
I've never made a drawer this way.....only fixed a few and never known whether the taper is from continuous use or fabricated that way.
I prefer the middle of the drawer too. All the repairs i've made - the middle is the safest and longer lasting. On the top it breaks off easy. And at the bottom you need a guide that keeps the drawer coming out straight.
More on drawer runners
Hey Cheroot, I,ve always made mine square but allowed enough clearance for possible swelling. Cutting them at at a slight taper is not a bad idea though! Think I'll do that on the next one. Thanks boet!
Drawer runners
Back to the drawer runners. I have found two very interesting articles on wooden drawer runners in Fine woodworking which I subscribe to on the net at a cost of $25 per year. If any body would like to see them, let me know and I will try and make a plan to get them to you. Also, I made my runners out of Lead wood which I then sanded with 220 grit and polished them on my lathe with a buff and Carnuba wax - Size is 20mm X 8mm. I am not going to glue them onto the carcase side but just screw them on. Any comments? Thanks for all the input
woodworm's drawer runner
Wow, Leadwood for the runners! And also buffed up! This drawer will be smooth as a baby's bottom.
20 x 8 is about the same as what I normally use.
I always only screw mine on, never had a problem.
Hmmm, I can just imagine, this project will be another work of art!
