Construction Techniques

Even with the best varnishes and oils, wood remains a porous, hygroscopic material that expand and contract with changes in humidity. Wood will always contain some water, it will never be bone dry. The amount of moisture in timber will depend on the relative humidity of the surrounding air. Thus, furniture built in a very humid climate might crack or open up when moved to surroundings with a low relative humidity. The wood dries out and shrinks. Even the table in your lounge changes dimension from season to season. This characteristic varies between species with some woods being more stable than others.

Over centuries, many techniques have evolved to compensate for wood movement and ensure that wood creations will endure. Apart from form, the art of woodworking is to match technique with purpose, thus ensuring pieces that will last for many generations. We use every trick in the book and keep learning and inventing new ones, always keeping in mind the laws that govern wood movement.

A favorite party trick is to use wood for hinges, door handles and latches. Often other materials used for these purposes detract from the wood's warmth and character.  Wooden hinges have been made for centuries but few people still use them. They add that extra touch to a unique piece and is a delight to make and use.

In this age of mass production, we pride ourselves on the handwork that goes into our pieces, be it carving or cutting dovetails for a corner joint.
